Davidson Plum (Ooray)

A uniquely Australian tropical fruit, Davidson Plums are endemic to the east coast, where they grow plum-sized fruit along the trunk of the tree.

Also known as Ooray, it is a medium-sized rainforest tree of northern Queensland, Australia. ⁠

Packed with antioxidants, they're extremely tart and superbly sour - yet with a very satisfying umami flavour that excites you to return for another big bite.

From jams and hot sauces, cocktails and desserts, their versatility shines in the kitchen - and we use them in every way imaginable!

An endangered rainforest species with large fleshy plums with two seeds inside. They are great for making cordials or jams and are great for desserts. Flavour:

It grows up to 10m high and 2-3m wide in maturity. Producing a dark burgundy fruit that is sour but edible, you’ll find them growing in clusters along the stem.

  • Common Name: Davidson plum, Ooray plum, native plum

  • Scientific Name: Davidsonia jerseyana

  • Seasonality: Fruits blooming in Spring, whilst edible in the months that follow for quite some time.

  • Growing Region: Indigenous to subtropical rainforests of eastern Australia, including Queensland and New South Wales.

The Davidson Plum uniquely grows along the trunk of the tree!

Flavour

The new growth is red, and it has huge compound leaves.

Fruit is sour and tart, like sour berries.⁠

Usage

The fruit has a high antioxidant content and can be used to make jams and jellies, as well as sweet and savoury sauces.

We use them in many products year round, from jams to cocktail mixers, to fermented chilli sauces and umeboshi pastes for restaurants.
